Mount Usher - Portrait of a Garden
Pages 1-5 limited edition of 100
This world famous Garden on the east Coast of Ireland was created 130 years ago by Edward Walpole and his sons Thomas, George, and Edward. They sought advice from the great horticulturists of the time and imported many plants from around the world. They also designed the beautiful suspension bridges and weirs on the Vartry river.
The present owner Mrs.Madelaine Jay has added considerably to this magical twenty-two acre garden which is currently managed by Avoca Hand Weavers.
In mid October of 1981 Madelaine Jay very kindly allowed me into Mount Usher Gardens when they were closed to the public.
I was captivated by various red orange and yellow leaves on shrubs and trees not native to Ireland. These vivid colours reflect gloriously in the river, and are replaced in the spring by a different set of reflections.
There are many trees and the continuously changing light plays a major roll. In addition both nature itself and our fickle climate make it impossible to ever repeat an image here.
